A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR
Healing...
Recently I watched a movie about Franklin D. Roosevelt's struggle with polio before he was
elected as President of the United States. It was a moving account of his own hardships as
well as a portrayal of the pain and suffering the illness inflicted upon so many children and
adults of his era. During that time in history it's probably safe to say that most folks knew or
knew about someone ravaged by the disease.
In the early 1960's I remember going to the doctor's office to receive my sugar cube. It was
really confusing because medicine at the doctor's office usually came in the form of those
dreaded shots with the 3-inch (diameter) (at least it seemed) needles that they stuck all the
way through you and poked it out the other side (at least it seemed). I watched the nurse
squeeze the eye-dropper, and as the medicine soaked into the sugar cube I eagerly
wondered, "Got any more medicine you need me to take?" Even then I had no idea what
they meant when they said, "It will keep you from getting polio." If you mention "polio" to
the youth of today, they'll probably look at you with a blank expression and have to check
the Internet to get any sort of clue about what you mean.
"Large crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the dumb,
and many other sick people, whom they placed at Jesus' feet; and he healed them."
(Matthew 15:30)
There is no doubt about the miracle of God's healing in whatever form it takes-- whether it
comes more instantly or over the course of time-- whether it comes from the laying on of
hands or through years of scientific experimentation. It's all a miracle that comes through
the power of prayer and many sacrifices that are made. As we celebrate Relay for Life in a
couple of weeks and the work of many to bring about healing and cure for cancer,
remember polio, and remember the miraculous power of God to heal.
